Roberta Ferrara

Founder, Artistic Director & Resident Choreographer

Born in Lecco in 1988, Roberta Ferrara is the founder, Artistic Director, and Resident Choreographer of Equilibrio Dinamico Repertoire Dance Company, active since 2011 and officially recognised as a Dance Production Body by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Puglia Region. With a distinctly European profile, the company cultivates international collaborations and synergies each year.

She is also the Artistic Director and Program Director of the Master in Contemporary Dance Performance – Equilibrio Dinamico Ensemble, an academic programme validated by the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (UK), the first programme in Italy with British university accreditation dedicated to contemporary dance.

Roberta has served as Associate Artistic Director for Odyssey Dance Theatre in Singapore. For more than a decade, she has developed, coordinated, and led pedagogical programmes for teachers and young dancers, including Inspiring Teachers & Creators and Equilibrio Dinamico Ensemble Teen.

In 2014 she graduated in Modern Literature – Theatre Studies at the University of Bari “Aldo Moro” with an experimental thesis on tarantism as a therapeutic and supportive ritual. Throughout this period, she developed Equilibrio Dinamico Pathway, a listening-based practice that combines technique and introspection, training new generations of dancers and facilitating educational exchanges with institutions in the UK, India, Japan, South Korea, and Switzerland.

Her artistic journey has also included performance experiences with Israeli choreographer Emanuel Gat, work as rehearsal assistant for the Spanish collective Cía Palido Domingo, and as movement director for the film And Still She Gives, produced by Experimental Film Virginia (USA). These experiences have enriched and expanded her perspective on the stage.

Her dance training has been nomadic and transdisciplinary, traversing techniques, methods, and movement languages. From this approach she has developed a personal vocabulary in constant evolution—one she continues to research and refine. She is currently qualifying as a Taiji Health instructor, integrating movement and holistic practice to support dancers and non-dancers alike—an approach that permeates her pedagogical work and her understanding of the body and dance.

As a pedagogue, Roberta has collaborated with prestigious international institutions including Theater Basel, Teatrul de Balet Sibiu, Prague Dance Conservatory, Mosa Ballet School, English National Ballet School, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Copenhagen Dance Festival, Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Lugo, Conservatorio Internacional Annarella Sánchez, Eko Dance Project, and Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin.

Her creations have been selected and presented in numerous international festivals, including Solo Tanz Theater Stuttgart, Masdanza, FIDCMX Mexico, Cortoindanza, Network Danza Urbana XL, Festival Ammutinamenti Anticorpi XL, ZED Festival, DanzInc, BallettGala Staatstheater Bremerhaven, Tanzmesse, Prospettiva Danza Teatro, Festival delle 100 Scale, Danza in Rete Festival, Lucky Trimmer, Fuoriformato Festival, Vivadança, Albania Dance Meeting, SoloCoreografico USA, Solo Contemporary Dance Festival Ankara, SID Festival Seattle, Interdans, Split Summer Festival, Quinzena de Dança de Almada, and the Jerusalem International Solo Dance Festival.

She has received several awards, including prizes at the Solo Tanz Theater Festival in Stuttgart and Linkage – Contemporary Dance Miniatures in Sofia, as well as the Outstanding Choreographer Award at Youth America Grand Prix and the 2024 absolute world first prize at the Lincoln Center in New York. Her work has been supported by the Italian Cultural Institutes of New York, Seoul, Mexico City, São Paulo, Athens, San Francisco, Ankara, Cologne, and Zagreb.

Her original creations have been commissioned by international institutions including Staatstheater Augsburg, Moravské Divadlo Olomouc, Korea Ballet House in Seoul, Delattre Dance Company in Germany, Experimental Film Virginia in the United States, Odyssey Dance Theatre in Singapore, and the National Choreographic Centre / Aterballetto for the project Visioni del Corpo.
