We constantly talk about time. “Have you got time to talk?”. “I don’t have enough time to finish my work”. What we’re actually talking about is duration, the period between sunrise and sunset for example. Time is something real and we can experience the passage of time concretely as if it was something tangible. However, when timeframes get longer, they also become more difficult to understand. It is very hard to grasp the idea of life between birth and death. We wake up every morning and go to bed every night, but do we ever actually experience how our time is slowly running out? Long periods of time are a mystery. The millions of years of the Earth’s history are entirely impossible to understand emotionally, and the concept of “eternity” leaves us completely powerless.
