“People used to die” is a rework for Equilibrio 2025 of the original choreographic piece “Avant les gens mouraient” originally created in 2014 for l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal (EDCM). The performance is developed around the Mainstream Hardcore movement, reinterpreting the gestures of Hardjump, Hakken (gabber scene) and Jumpstyle.
Jumpstyle is a popular movement that emerged in the 2000s, evolving from Hardstyle (some purists of the movement even trace its origins back to the 1980s).
Jumpstyle is a genre of electronic music mainly practiced in Europe, particularly in Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France.
The term also refers to a type of dance that accompanies the music genre, which gained popularity towards the end of the
1990s in northern Europe, mainly through the dancer Patrick Jumpen, and musical artists such as Zware Jongens, Chicago Zone, DJ Coone, Ronald-V, E-Max, who are still prominent figures in this music style.
Jumpstyle is an ultra-dynamic dance composed of a series of quick jumps combined with leg movements and stylish figures called “tricks” typically lasting between 20 and 30 seconds.
This dance style has attracted a large international fanbase, partly thanks to YouTube videos that teach viewers how to perform the basic steps. Through the internet, the genre spread worldwide, giving rise to several variations over time, such as oldschool, hardjump, and ownstyle.
